I like how the lightbulb reflected in a broken/dirty mirror has been painted as flowers inside a vase. There's a few other aspects of the painting that I find interesting...
Watching the film I noticed that this scene begins with a close up of a butterfly in the rain, on the window mesh. This is what the character appears to be staring at for a few seconds in the film. In the still image from the film his eyes appear to be closed, but they are open.
Bob Dylan has painted the eyes closed — He hasn't painted the butterfly on the window. It seems to me he has painted the structure outside in a way that resembles part of bird (the eye is open..). The butterfly has gone, but the flowers have appeared in the mirror.
I suppose the mirror has been painted as a painting (a painting within a painting)... If it was still a mirror in the painting, then the vase of flowers would have to be hanging where the lightbulb is.. Either way, this mirror / flowers / butterfly aspect seem symbolic to me.
The form of a bird in the window I think to me seems more like a bird due to the window mesh giving me the impression of the pattern feathers make on the surface of a bird...
As an aside, I have been listening to Key West (Philosopher Pirate) whilst typing this here. Stay on the road — follow the highway sign.
I have set the Theme Time Radio Hour episode, Radio … to play here at 1 AM (London time).
“I heard all about it — he was going down slow / Heard it on the wireless radio / From down in the boondocks — way down in Key West”
