Recently rediscovered this song thanks to the 1974 Dylan/The Band Sampler put out a few months back. The MSG performance of the song is fantastic. I can only count the number of times I’ve listened to Planet Waves on one hand so it really took me by surprise how good the tune is!
I remember buying the Asylum Version of this record at a very reduced price back in the 80ties. It also had a cutoff corner and was punched with a hole. Does anybody now what that means?
I'm guessing that spelling of dearly suicided Canadian son of Auto Mechanic turned provincial Ontario Church Minister, Richard Manuel is a darkly intentional pun on Richard being the hand-played piano player, or Manual laborer, while Canadian Prof Garth Hudson played all those electronic black boxes that made him such a rootsy pioneer practitioner of piano and assorted keyboard along with other (even reed\wind instruments getting Yanked into and their tones through synthesizers for an otherworldly aural patina that got old fast..)...
As Danny O'Keefe wrote and sang from his Pacific NW Seattle home perch a few years later on his final monopoly Warner label album GLOBAL BLUES, recorded sleekly yet soulfully in L.A. with top shelf players who knew their way through jazz his\herstory. Even as Danny's nimble vintage early 20th Century stride jazz vocals are on display with his very post-Modern Dystopian track that not even U. of Tube has a clip of titled "Livin' In Da Modern Age.. .."
Enjoy from whatever Survivalist Bunker ya find yerself in sheltering with Richard Manuel's manual presto-digitation on piano with early pre-AI electronics tinkerer Garth Hudson's rigged keyboard the Band's glorious synthesis of rootsy backwoods soul here from The Band's Robbie Robertson et al rehearsal room around Big Pink in the Catskill or Shawangunk Mountains a short if lovely ways up into the Hudson Valley here via Sherman and Peabody's Wayback Machine: Working out their quirky kinks presciently filmed for paradoxically primo harmonic yield and wearing an organ-ized Union Shield.....

I just realized Richard's last name was misspelled on the back cover.
What have other fans interpreted the album title to mean?
