Honkytonk Man. 1982 / Painting of a scene from this film by Bob Dylan

Clint Eastwood. Featuring Marty Robbins and Porter Wagoner.

Honkytonk Man. 1982. Produced, directed and starring Clint Eastwood and his son Kyle Eastwood. Screenplay by Clancy Carlie — based on his 1980 novel of the same name. Marty Robbins appears in the film — his last appearance before he died, just prior to the release of the film — December 15, 1982. The story of Clint Eastwood’s character, Red Stovall, is loosely based on the life of Jimmie Rodgers.

Bob Dylan played the Marty Robbins song El Paso on the Musical map episode of Theme Time Radio Hour — and wrote about the song in his book The Philosophy of Modern Song.

Painting by Bob Dylan. Picnic. 2021. Acrylic on canvas. 110.5 x 171.5 cm

John McIntire—Grandpa Wagoneer, Kyle Eastwood—Whit Wagoneer, Alexa Kenin—Marlene Mooney/Moonglow, Clint Eastwood—Red Stovall.

Bob Dylan has not painted the bottle that Whit Wagoneer is holding, and he has painted Marlene Mooney’s hand down upon her knee and not up towards her mouth / holding the sandwich…

In the film when Marlene picks up the sandwich and moves it towards her mouth, Red Stovall tells her to put it down…

Quite a picnic..!

This reminded me of the painting Woman in the Window…

Woman in the Window

Acrylic on canvas. 91 x 183 cm.

Marty Robbins in the film. He died of a heart attack just before the release of the film. In the film he steps into sing mid-song for Red Stovall, played by Clint Eastwood, who is not far off from dying of tuberculosis.

Unrelated to this… I took a few photographs myself of this painting at Halcyon Gallery a few months ago — Here is a higher quality photograph and title from Halcyon Gallery:

I noticed a mention of this painting yesterday here (I really recommend their page) —

As Within, so Without. As Above, so Below
Bob looked happy and relaxed as we finished a bodywork session with counterbalance stretches: standing facing each other, holding wrists, bending knees and leaning back, which always made him laugh. Inside and out, everything seemed to be sighing. The autumn equinox had come and gone, the dramatic change was underway, but it was still warm enough to wal…
